Ciao a tutti Its been about 2 years since I started this process I had made my appointment at the consulate in Los Angeles in August of 2019 the appointment was a short wait later January 31 2022 I learned a lot on the way of collecting documents certifications apostilles international certifications translations census records church records military records the list goes on seemingly foreverHeres the video I put together to show my idea of how to organize your documents for a consulate appointment Im not sure if this is the best way to do it or even if its a good way to do it When I hear back from the consulate probably later this year sometime Ill edit here to say how it worked out

Keep your envelopesPrepare yourself to gather a lot of documentation I watch a lot of true crime tv so having to collect all of these documents of my previous family members is quite exciting for me Most of the tips and mistakes that I learn along the way are on the Finding Genealogical Documents post Here I just wanted to make some quick notes about the documents in the simplest termsI have read that consulates vary on their requirements so its important to find your consulate and find the requirements Im planning on getting more than the required documents to be extra prepared For instance Ive read that I would only need my Great Grandfathers Certificate of Naturalization from the USCIS but I found and ordered copies of his Petition of Naturalization and his Oath to become a US citizen in 1921 I actually found those by accident which Ill talk about how in Finding Genealogical DocumentsIn my case your case will probably vary Ive needed to acquire birth certificates and applicable death certificates for everyone in my paternal line from me to my Great Grandfather I also need birth and death certificates for all of their wives ie my mom Grandmother etc And then all of the marriage certificates and licenses I can find between them If theres evidence of any divorces mismatching last names on any women along the line I would need any divorce decreesOf course all of these documents youll need to get certified copies And then

The first thing that Ive read or seen on videos everywhere Ive one which I have echoed a few times already is as soon as you know you are eligible book your consulate appointment My wait time was 2 12 years for Los Angeles I read that the wait time was 8 years right before I made my appointment If you have nothing but time like not me you can take all of your documents and go stay in Italy for a few months and get it done a lot quicker but for me I waitHeres a map that I made that I thought would be really quick to whip together until I realized that a few states are split up by counties that I had no idea where the county boundaries were It has all of the consulates on a map that represents the contiguous United States It was a pretty good geography lesson for me thoughThere was a phone system for the Los Angeles consulate that I had to pay 16 for the call to book my appointment About 6 months later they added the ability to make your appointment online Im not sure what the cost is but the calendar is accessible after you create an account so you can see what the wait time may be like Last time I checked was a couple months ago and the next available seemed to be August 2023 Here is the link to that system for the Los Angeles consulate
