Important Citizenship Update: Italian citizenship by descent laws changed significantly on March 28, 2025. Eligibility is now generally limited to those with an Italian-born parent or grandparent, and new rules affect citizenship transmission involving minors in the bloodline. My citizenship journey occurred under the previous rules, so some information in this post may no longer apply. Please verify your eligibility under current Italian law.
Ciao a tutti! It's been about 2 years since I started this process. I had made my appointment at the consulate in Los Angeles in August of 2019, the appointment was a short wait later, January 31 2022. I learned a lot on the way of collecting documents, certifications, apostilles (international certifications), translations, census records, church records, military records, the list goes on seemingly forever.
Here's the video I put together to show my idea of how to organize your documents for a consulate appointment. I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it, or even if it's a good way to do it. When I hear back from the consulate, probably later this year sometime, I'll edit here to say how it worked out:
